Hype vs Reality in Marketing Your Business

When it comes to online marketing, there is a ton of hype, half-truths and flat out lies being passed around out there. 

When it comes to online marketing, there is a ton of hype, half-truths and flat out lies being passed around out there.  This article seeks to address some of these and will assist you in conquering these various hypes. 

If you’re going to launch a business, you need to separate fact from fiction and create clarity, right now, once and for all. 

You’ve reached the point where you’re ready to move forward and start marketing your product or service online. You’ve done some goal setting around your dreams. You’ve answered questions that most haven’t even considered prior to launching a business. And you’ve learned what you need to focus on to keep yourself in a peak state moving forward.  

“Now all I need is to think it and believe it and it will happen, right?” 

To be honest, if it were that simple, everyone would be living their dreams, making millions of dollars and traveling the world while owning a successful business.

Let’s look at some of these hypes of which we’ve all been victims at some point or another. The realities may help you with shifting your mindset to allow for the fresh new approach that your start-up desperately needs.

The Hype:  If I buy this course around launching a product it will teach me all I need to know to make my first million dollars online.

Reality: What we are actually experiencing right now is a ton of false claims suggesting that if you just buy a particular course you can launch and grow a million-dollar business this year.  As tempting as this may sound…. It’s not the norm nor anywhere close to it.

Each product you buy should fit according to what you’ve already decided needs to happen for you to reach your goals. I’ve found that if you don’t become laser-focused on the stage that your business is in right now, you can drive yourself crazy with overwhelm and ideas of what else you should try to deploy.  

So here’s the challenge:  when you buy ‘a course’, you are stepping into just a small section of your overall business.  

You ask… so what’s the challenge with that? Well, it doesn’t consider where you currently are, who your audience is, what you are selling, what your overall strategy is… I could go on and on.  

The Hype: I don’t need to be a marketer to be successful in my business. I just need to know my product or service.

Reality:  We are ALL marketers if we are selling a product or service. If you don’t agree with this statement, I suggest that you seriously consider if you have what it takes to build a successful business. This statement might sound harsh but it’s the truth. You have to become or bring someone in that will be the marketer in the company.  Without you as this person or someone else responsible for this area of your business, it will be impossible to grow.

The Hype: Social media doesn’t work. I’m posting on Facebook and I’m not getting any sales. 

Reality: Having a Facebook Page and posting regularly is just the beginning. You need to start with a plan and a purpose and be strategic about what you are posting. It’s about building community and engaging with your audience, not necessarily sales. Just because we’re online now, doesn’t mean we skip building relationships with our new connections. People buy from people they know, like and trust.  That hasn’t changed. Put the work in.

The Hype: I don’t need a website anymore. I just need a landing page funnel to sell my product/service.

Reality: There is a ton of talk out there right now saying, just build a sales funnel and sell your product.  However, there is a bigger conversation that needs to happen here before you make that decision. Generally speaking, you would only create a landing page funnel if you want your customer to do one thing and one thing only. 

The Hype: I can’t launch my product without having a custom website built.

Reality: This couldn’t be farther from the truth. You can launch your product or service today. Build a landing page, send some traffic to it and test it (assuming you’ve done the idea and launch stage of your business).  

The point is, don’t spend thousands of dollars having a website built for a product or service you’re not sure the market is willing to pay for yet. Save your money for the marketing – it’s not time to spend thousands on a custom website yet.

The Hype: I can just outsource my marketing to one of these ‘agencies’ offering services I see on Facebook and they will take care of getting me traffic, sales and take care of building my community.

Reality: There are tons of inexperienced marketers selling services and marketing strategy online today. They take a course, complete a program and believe they have enough experience to help you. Now don’t get me wrong… it’s not that they can’t help you… but is that the type of help you currently need?  

Remember, if you have a strategic plan, selecting the person/company to do the implementation isn’t as much of a risk.  They are following what you have already established as being your goals. Leaving your ‘marketing’ up to an inexperienced agency is a recipe for disaster..

Once you’re aware of the dangers of hype when it comes to starting your own business, you can start fresh and adjust your business strategy, focusing on one stage of your business at a time to achieve your goals. 

Commit to leaving your past beliefs and teachings about marketing behind, otherwise, at some point, they will rear their ugly head and threaten to destroy your efforts to build a successful business. If that seems too unpalatable, just approach it with an open mind, where all new ideas are worth trying and learning from.
